Pop Quiz

What does Huckleberry Finn teach us
about the nature of freedom, racial integration
in rural settings, the trickster figure, and
white water rafting?

In “The Yellow Wall-paper,” how does Gilman’s
nameless narrator see her own mental disintegration
in the upper-class shabby chic attic of her summer
estate, and how does this disintegration make the case
for holistic medicine, communal child-care and
tropical health spa getaways for the very rich and
emotionally fragile?

What was Gertrude Stein smoking?

Compare F. Scott Fitzgerald to Ernest Hemingway.
Consider their life philosophies, significant images,
settings, and thematic patterns.  Using examples
from “Babylon Revisited” and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place,”
determine which of these authors would be more likely
to defeat the other in a drunken brawl. Use examples
from the texts to support your claims.

Is John Steinbeck sexist or feminist?  Discuss.

Considering the short stories we’ve read so far,
list at least 5 reasons why the American Dream
is impossible and/or dead.
